Key Differences Between Hair Extensions with Clips, Tape, and Hand-Tied Extensions

Updated: Nov 20, 2023

So, you’ve decided to go for it and finally get hair extensions. Bring on all the voluminously lengthy hair extensions hairstyles in your future! It can be intimidating trying to figure out which hair extensions types will work best for the look you want to achieve. You might have a few questions on your mind, such as:

  • What are hand-tied extensions?

  • What about the hair extensions tape-in style?

  • Is it worth buying hair extensions with clips?

There are several kinds of hair extensions, so how will you know if you’re making the right decision? Today, I’m going to answer your questions about which hair extensions are best and what hair extensions types are worthy of your investment.

Clip-In Hair Extensions

Hand-Tied Extensions

What Are Clip-In Extensions?

Hair extensions with clips work best for those looking for a DIY method. They’re clipped into your natural hair using the clips attached to the wefts. Once you’re done wearing them, clip-in extensions are removed and stored until your next wear. You can choose between synthetic or human hair and different shades to best match your natural hair color.

There are a few challenges to keep in mind when choosing clip-in extensions:

  • You’re basically your own hairstylist, which can be tricky if you haven’t worn clip-in extensions before. The colors often don’t match your natural hair (and hair color not matching is a dead give away you’re wearing extensions!)

  • They must be applied every time you want to wear them and removed before sleeping or showering.

  • Clip-in extensions require extra hair care separate from your daily routine to avoid breakage and matting.

Tape-In Hair Extensions

What Are Tape-In Extensions?

Tape-in hair extensions are a semi-permanent option you’ll need a professional hairstylist to install. Tape-ins are generally thinner and more lightweight than clip-in extensions. These hair extensions tape into your natural hair with a medical-grade tape adhesive. You can reuse these extensions 2-3 times by adding new tape adhesives when reapplied.

With tape-in hair extensions, there are a few things to consider:

  • These extensions require a stylist to apply tape adhesive directly onto your hair, which can be damaging to your strands. The glue is sticky, unhealthy and damages the hair. If the hair extensions are exposed to wind you’ll be able to see the tape. Not seamless

  • Though they’re less maintenance than clip-ins, tape-ins must still be reapplied more often than other semi-permanent hair extension methods.

  • The tape extensions themselves don’t last as long and have to be replaced after a few uses.

Hand-Tied Hair Extensions

What Are Hand-Tied Extensions?

It’s no secret that these are my absolute fave out of all the hair extensions types! Natural Beaded Row (NBR) and Invisible Bead Extensions (IBE or invisible hair extensions) are hand-

tied extensions that attach to your natural hair without the need for glue or tape. For best results, hand-tied extensions should be installed by an experienced hairstylist certified in this method. The extension hair itself will last anywhere from 6-12 months – definitely a worthwhile investment!

The Benefits of Hand-Tied Extensions

If you’re wondering, which hair extensions are best, it’s these right here. (No competition!)

Hand-tied extensions use a string and bead method for installation, which is way less harsh on your hair! They won’t cause damage like clip-ins or tape-ins. You can also rock any hair extensions hairstyles without your attachment points showing (yes, even a high pony!)

Your stylist can cut and color these extensions to make those #hairgoals a reality since they're made with high-quality human hair. The installation takes about 45 minutes per row, with two rows being the average. Expect your extensions to be adjusted every 8-10 weeks, depending on your hair growth.
